Conan Exiles Server Settings Explained: ServerSettings.ini, Best Values and Single Player

Conan Exiles server settings live in one file, ServerSettings.ini, and almost every rule of your world is a line in it: PvP, raid hours, harvest rates, crafting speed, thrall limits and building decay. You can change them two ways. In game, open the Server Settings tab once you are admin (in single player you don’t even need that). Or edit the file with the server stopped. This guide shows where the file is, explains the settings that matter, gives recommended values for PvE, PvP and solo play, and fixes the “my settings don’t save” problem.

Where is the Conan Exiles server settings file?

On a dedicated server, the settings file is ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini, or LinuxServer instead of WindowsServer on the Linux build. Two more files sit next to it: Engine.ini holds the server name, join password and region switches, and Game.ini holds RCON.

File Section What goes in it
ServerSettings.ini [ServerSettings] Admin password, every gameplay rule in this guide
Engine.ini [OnlineSubsystem] ServerName and ServerPassword
Engine.ini [Regions] ExcludedRegions=IsleOfSiptah to run without the Isle of Siptah (Enhanced)
Game.ini [RconPlugin] RCON on/off, password and port

The Server Settings tab in game writes to the same ServerSettings.ini, so the two ways of changing settings always agree once the server has saved.

How to change server settings in Conan Exiles

On your own server you change settings either in game, as admin, from the Server Settings tab, or by editing ServerSettings.ini with the server stopped and then starting it again. In single player the same tab works without any admin step. A handful of settings only take effect after a restart, whichever way you change them.

On a dedicated server

  1. Join and become admin, either with the Make Me Admin button or by entering MakeMeAdmin yourpassword in the console (Insert or ~).
  2. Change the sliders and checkboxes in the Server Settings tab, or type SetServerSetting "HarvestAmountMultiplier" "2.0" in the console. The quotes are required.
  3. To see every setting, including ones the menu hides, run GetAllServerSettings.
  4. Restart if you changed one of the settings that need it (listed below).

Editing the file instead? Stop the server, edit ServerSettings.ini, save, start. Lines go under [ServerSettings] as Key=Value.

In single player

Open the menu, go to Settings, then Server Settings, and change what you like. Single player uses the same server settings, so everything in this guide applies, and you don’t need an admin password. This is how you change server settings in single player without touching a file.

On a PS4 or Xbox private server

Console players can’t host their own server; console private servers are rented from G-Portal, Funcom’s official server partner. You change the settings in game the same way: Make Me Admin, then the Server Settings tab. The setting names in this guide are the same ones the tab changes, so “server settings explained” for PS4 is this list too.

Settings that need a restart

PVPEnabled, NoOwnership, LandClaimRadiusMultiplier, DisableBuildingAbandonment, AmbientLifeEnabled and BuildingReplicationDistance only change after the server restarts. Most others apply live.

Conan Exiles server settings explained

Most settings are multipliers where 1 is normal: 2 doubles the effect and 0.5 halves it. A few are on/off switches or times. Below are the ones server owners change most, grouped by what they control, with defaults from the official Conan Exiles Enhanced settings reference and a note wherever a restart is needed.

Access and the server list

Setting What it does
ServerName (Engine.ini) The name in the server browser. This is how you change the server name; restart afterwards.
ServerPassword The server password players need to join. Empty means anyone can join.
AdminPassword Unlocks Make Me Admin. Keep it different from the join password.
EnableWhitelist Only whitelisted players can join (off by default). Add players over RCON with whitelistplayer <steamid>.
serverRegion Region filter in the server list: 0 Europe, 1 North America, 2 Asia, 3 Australia, 4 South America, 5 Japan. It doesn’t move the server.
ServerCommunity Playstyle filter: Purist, Relaxed, Hardcore, Roleplaying or Experimental.
ServerMessageOfTheDay The message players see. Good place for server rules.
MaxNudity Caps nudity for everyone on the server (default Full).

PvP, PvE and raiding

Setting What it does
PVPEnabled Player-versus-player on or off. Needs a restart.
CombatModeModifier Set to 1 with PvP on for PvE-Conflict, the official “fight but don’t raid” ruleset.
CanDamagePlayerOwnedStructures Allows raiding other players’ buildings (off by default).
RestrictPVPTime / RestrictPVPBuildingDamageTime Limit fighting or raiding to set hours, using per-day keys such as PVPBuildingDamageEnabledFriday, PVPBuildingDamageTimeFridayStart=1800 and ...End=2200.
DynamicBuildingDamage Bases can only be raided while an owner is online, or for DynamicBuildingDamagePeriod seconds after the last one logs off (default 1800).
DisableBuildingDuringTimeRestrictedPVP Stops building during raid hours, so nobody walls up mid-raid.
FriendlyFireDamageMultiplier Damage to clanmates (default 0.25).
DropEquipmentOnDeath / EverybodyCanLootCorpse What you drop when you die, and whether anyone can loot it.

Harvesting, XP and crafting speed

Setting What it does
HarvestAmountMultiplier Resources per hit.
ResourceRespawnSpeedMultiplier How fast harvested nodes come back.
PlayerXPRateMultiplier Multiplies all XP. PlayerXPKillMultiplier, ...HarvestMultiplier, ...CraftMultiplier and ...TimeMultiplier tune each source.
ItemConvertionMultiplier The crafting time multiplier, misspelled in the game itself; type it exactly like this. Below 1 crafts faster: 0.5 halves crafting time.
ThrallConversionMultiplier The thrall crafting speed setting: how long the Wheel of Pain takes. Below 1 is faster.
CraftingCostMultiplier Materials per recipe. This is cost, not speed.
FuelBurnTimeMultiplier How long each piece of fuel burns.
ItemSpoilRateScale How fast food spoils. Lower lasts longer.

Thralls and the thrall limit

Setting What it does
UseMinionPopulationLimit Turns the thrall and pet limit on (off by default).
MinionPopulationBaseValue Thralls and pets a clan of one may own (default 50).
MinionPopulationPerPlayer Extra allowance per clan member (default 5).
MinionOverpopulationCleanup Minutes between clean-ups of followers over the limit (default 60).
ThrallDamageToPlayersMultiplier / ...ToNPCsMultiplier How hard thralls hit (both default 0.5).
DisableThrallDecay Stops thralls decaying while their owner is away.
UnconsciousTimeSeconds How long a knocked-out thrall stays down (default 600, ten minutes).

On a busy server the thrall limit is one of the strongest lag levers you have, because the server simulates every follower in every base, whether or not its owner is online.

Building and decay

Setting What it does
DisableBuildingAbandonment Turns building decay off, so bases of absent players stay. Needs a restart.
BuildingDecayTimeMultiplier Higher means buildings take longer to decay.
LandClaimRadiusMultiplier Size of each building’s claim. Needs a restart.
NoOwnership Removes ownership: anyone can open, use or dismantle anything. Needs a restart.
StabilityLossMultiplier Stability lost per attached piece. 0 removes stability limits.
BuildingValidationEnabled Removes pieces that load with invalid stability. Off by default, recommended for PvP servers where floating bases are an exploit.

Day, night and survival

DayCycleSpeedScale speeds up the whole day; DayTimeSpeedScale, NightTimeSpeedScale and DawnDuskSpeedScale tune each part, so a higher night value means shorter nights. PlayerActiveHungerMultiplier and PlayerActiveThirstMultiplier set how fast you get hungry and thirsty, and StaminaCostMultiplier how much each action costs.

Conan Exiles Isle of Siptah server settings

On Enhanced, the Isle of Siptah is a region of the same map, and its systems have their own settings: StormEnabled for the Maelstrom (15 minutes long by default, every 105 minutes), StormBuildingDamageEnabled (off by default), ElderThingsEnabled and SiegeElderThingsEnabled (siege Elder Things only go after buildings of more than 41 pieces by default), SurgeDespawnTimer and VaultRefreshTime (10 minutes). To run the Exiled Lands alone, add ExcludedRegions=IsleOfSiptah under [Regions] in Engine.ini; it also lowers RAM use.

The Purge

EnablePurge switches Purge attacks on or off, PurgeLevel sets difficulty (0 turns them off), MinPurgeOnlinePlayers sets how many players must be online for a Purge (0 allows Purges on offline clans), and RestrictPurgeTime limits them to set hours.

There is no single best set of Conan Exiles server settings, because a relaxed PvE group and a raiding clan want opposite things. These starting points suit most groups. Paste the lines under [ServerSettings] with the server stopped, start it, play a week and tune from there.

Relaxed PvE for a group of friends

PVPEnabled=False
HarvestAmountMultiplier=2.0
PlayerXPRateMultiplier=2.0
ItemConvertionMultiplier=0.5
ThrallConversionMultiplier=0.5
DisableBuildingAbandonment=True

PvP with raid nights

PVPEnabled=True
CanDamagePlayerOwnedStructures=True
RestrictPVPBuildingDamageTime=True
PVPBuildingDamageEnabledFriday=True
PVPBuildingDamageTimeFridayStart=1800
PVPBuildingDamageTimeFridayEnd=2200
PVPBuildingDamageEnabledSaturday=True
PVPBuildingDamageTimeSaturdayStart=1800
PVPBuildingDamageTimeSaturdayEnd=2200
BuildingValidationEnabled=True
UseMinionPopulationLimit=True

PvE-Conflict (fights, no raiding)

PVPEnabled=True
CombatModeModifier=1
CanDamagePlayerOwnedStructures=False

Best settings for single player

Solo play is slower because one person does a clan’s worth of gathering. Most solo players raise HarvestAmountMultiplier to 2–3, bump XP, set ThrallConversionMultiplier to 0.5 or lower so thralls are ready sooner, and turn building decay off. Change it all from Settings > Server Settings, and come back to it whenever the grind stops being fun.

Conan Exiles server settings not saving? How to fix it

When a change doesn’t stick, it is almost always one of five things: the file was edited while the server ran, the setting needs a restart, you weren’t admin, you edited the wrong file, or the key has a typo. Work down this list in order.

  • You edited the file while the server was running. On shutdown the server may save its in-memory values over your edits. Stop it first, edit, then start.
  • The setting needs a restart. PvP, ownership, land claim radius, building decay and a few others only change after one (see the list above).
  • You are not admin. If you can’t change server settings in the menu, press Make Me Admin with the admin password first.
  • Wrong folder or wrong file. Use the WindowsServer (or LinuxServer) copy under Saved/Config, and put the name and join password in Engine.ini, not ServerSettings.ini.
  • A typo in the key. Keys must match exactly, including the game’s own spelling of ItemConvertionMultiplier. GetAllServerSettings shows the names the server knows.

Private server basics

A Conan Exiles private server is simply one you control instead of Funcom: on PC you host it yourself or rent one, and on consoles you rent it. Make it private with a ServerPassword, or lock it to named players with EnableWhitelist.

If your private server is not showing up in the list, search its exact name, tick Show modded servers if it runs mods, or skip the list and use Direct Connect. Setting one up from scratch is covered in the Conan Exiles dedicated server guide.

Skip the file editing

With Conan Exiles server hosting on GameTeam you never open ServerSettings.ini unless you want to. Tell the built-in AI copilot “make it PvE, double the harvest and let thralls break twice as fast” and it writes PVPEnabled=False, HarvestAmountMultiplier=2.0 and ThrallConversionMultiplier=0.5, then restarts the server because PvP needs it. You pay per GB of RAM, from $0.49/GB a week, with unlimited slots, and you can move the server to another location later without losing the world.

FAQ

How do I change Conan Exiles server settings?

As admin, from the Server Settings tab in the in-game menu, or by editing ServerSettings.ini in ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer with the server stopped.

Can I change server settings in single player?

Yes. Settings > Server Settings works in single player without an admin password, and every setting in this guide is there.

Which setting changes crafting speed?

ItemConvertionMultiplier (Crafting Time Multiplier) for items and ThrallConversionMultiplier for thralls. Values below 1 make crafting faster.

How do I set a thrall limit?

Turn on UseMinionPopulationLimit, then set MinionPopulationBaseValue (default 50) and MinionPopulationPerPlayer (default 5 per clan member).

How do I set a Conan Exiles server password or whitelist?

Put ServerPassword= under [OnlineSubsystem] in Engine.ini for a join password. For a whitelist, set EnableWhitelist=True and add players with whitelistplayer <steamid> over RCON.

How do I change the server region?

serverRegion only changes which region filter the server appears under. The ping your players get depends on where the machine actually is, so a far-away server needs moving, not relabelling.

What are the Conan Exiles official server settings?

Official servers run Funcom’s PvP, PvE and PvE-Conflict rulesets and you can’t change them. To copy PvE-Conflict on your own server, use PVPEnabled=True with CombatModeModifier=1.
