Valheim Server Commands: Admin, Console and Devcommands (1.0 List)

Valheim server commands come in three groups: admin commands, player commands and cheat commands (devcommands). On a dedicated server you open the console with F5, and only players listed in adminlist.txt can kick, ban, save or change world modifiers. Cheats don’t work on a vanilla dedicated server at all, even for admins; the Server Devcommands mod is how admins get them. Below is every command that matters on a server in 1.0, how to get access, and why F5 sometimes does nothing.

How to use commands on a Valheim server

To use commands on a Valheim server, turn on the developer console, add your player ID to the server’s adminlist.txt, join, and press F5. The console has been off by default since patch 0.221.4, so most “F5 does nothing” reports come from that step. Player commands work for everyone; admin commands check the list first.

  1. Enable the console. Turn it on in the game’s gameplay settings, or add -console to Valheim’s launch options in Steam (right-click Valheim, Properties, Launch Options). The launch option overrides the setting.
  2. Get your ID. Press F2 in game. The panel shows your ID in the format [Platform]_[User ID], for example Steam_76561198000000000. The server log shows it too when you connect.
  3. Add it to adminlist.txt. The file sits in the server’s save folder: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim on Windows, ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim on Linux, or wherever -savedir points. One ID per line, case sensitive.
  4. Restart the server (stop it with Ctrl+C, not the window’s X), join, and press F5. Type help to list what your game knows.

Other platforms: on PC Game Pass, add -console to the end of a shortcut to Valheim.exe. On Xbox, the wiki’s combo is LB + RB + Menu, then A for the keyboard.

The admin, ban and whitelist files

Admin rights live in files, not in a command. adminlist.txt makes someone a Valheim server admin, bannedlist.txt holds bans, and permittedlist.txt is a whitelist: once anyone is on it, everyone else is locked out. All three use the same ID format. The full rundown, with launch-line settings, is in Valheim server settings explained.

Valheim server admin commands

Valheim server admin commands are console commands that only work when your ID is in adminlist.txt. They cover moderation (kick, ban, unban), saving, world modifiers and a handful of world-level tools Iron Gate opened up to admins in patch 0.217.22. Type them in the F5 console; they run on the server, so they affect everyone.

Command What it does Notes
kick [name/IP/ID] Kicks a player The player can rejoin
ban [name/IP/ID] Bans a player Same IDs as bannedlist.txt
unban [name/IP/ID] Lifts a ban
banned Lists banned players
save Saves the world now Also resets the autosave timer
setworldpreset [name] Applies a modifier preset Normal, Casual, Easy, Hard, Hardcore, Immersive, Hammer
setworldmodifier [name] [value] Sets one world modifier e.g. setworldmodifier raids none
resetworldkeys Puts world modifiers back to default Doesn’t touch boss progress
setkey / removekey / resetkeys Adds, removes or clears global keys resetkeys also clears boss keys; careful
listkeys Lists the world’s global keys
players [number] Sets the difficulty scale to a player count players 0 resets it
sleep Skips forward one day
skiptime [seconds] Moves time forward (default 240) Object timers don’t follow, so spawns, crops and smelters can stall
randomevent / stopevent Starts a random raid, or stops the current one Any admin, not just the host, since 0.217.11
restartparty Restarts the PlayFab connection For crossplay servers
genloc Places locations that were never generated Slow; Iron Gate warns it may disconnect players

The official guide only spells out the first four. The rest come from the patch notes and the game’s own help output, which is worth checking after each update.

Changing world modifiers with commands

Valid values match the launch-line ones: combat veryeasy to veryhard, deathpenalty casual to hardcore, resources muchless to most, raids none to muchmore, portals casual, hard or veryhard. A preset wipes earlier modifiers, so set the preset first:

setworldpreset hard
setworldmodifier raids less
setworldmodifier deathpenalty easy

Want the change to survive a world reset or a new world? Put it on the launch line instead, as covered in the settings guide.

Player and chat commands

Player commands need no admin rights and no devcommands. Anyone can type them in the F5 console, and they also work from the chat window: type / and press Tab to see the list. They’re handy on any server, from checking your ping to binding an emote to a mouse button.

Command What it does
help Lists commands; help 2 4 shows the second quarter
ping Measures your latency to the server
say / s / W [name] Chat, shout, whisper
bind [key] [command] Binds a command to a key, e.g. bind mouse4 cheer
printbinds / unbind / resetbinds Shows, clears or resets binds
fov [number] Changes field of view
maxfps [number] Caps your frame rate
info Prints system information
resetspawn Resets your spawn point
die Kills your character (useful when stuck)
clear Clears the console

Valheim devcommands (cheat commands)

Devcommands is the switch that unlocks Valheim’s cheat commands. Type devcommands in the console to turn cheats on and again to turn them off. In vanilla Valheim they only work in single player or in a world you host from the game’s own Start server option. On a dedicated server they do nothing, even for admins.

The commands people use most:

Command What it does
god / ghost No damage / enemies ignore you
fly / freefly Fly mode / free camera
debugmode Unlocks the debug keys: B builds without a workbench or resources, K kills nearby enemies, L removes drops, Z flies
nocost Build and craft for free
spawn [name] [amount] [level] Spawns an item or creature by its prefab ID
itemset [name] [keep] Gives a premade biome kit; without keep your current items drop
heal / puke Full health, stamina and eitr / empties your food slots
raiseskill [skill] [amount] / resetskill [skill] Raises or resets a skill; all works for both
tame Tames nearby tameable creatures
killenemies / removedrops Clears enemies or item drops around you
goto [x] [z] / pos / findtp [text] Teleport, show coordinates, jump to the nearest match
exploremap / resetmap Reveals or hides the whole map
tod [0-1] / env [name] Time of day (0.5 is noon, -1 reverts) / forces weather
event [name] Starts a named raid
setpower [name] Sets a Forsaken power and resets its cooldown

That’s not all of them. 1.0 added more, including findbiome, repairall and inventoryclean, and help lists every one with its arguments.

Devcommands and achievements in 1.0

Cheating now leaves a mark. Since 1.0, most devcommands (like spawn) flag your character and world as cheated, after a confirmation prompt, and that blocks achievements. Spawned items show as “cheated item”, and picking one up puts a clean character in a temporary cheat state until it drops them. A few commands, such as freefly, don’t count. Hammer mode counts as a temporary cheat. Patch 1.0.12 added yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway to opt back in, and 1.0.20 cleared flags a bug had set by mistake.

The Server Devcommands mod

Server Devcommands is a BepInEx mod by JereKuusela that lets admins use devcommands on a dedicated server. It adds an admin check to the devcommands command, so only IDs in adminlist.txt get cheats. Install it on the admin’s game, and on the server too for the full feature set. Everyone else plays without it.

What the Valheim server devcommands mod adds on top of plain cheats:

  • The console is on without the -console option, and cheats also work from chat, with autocomplete.
  • Several commands in one line, separated by ;, and your own shortcuts with alias.
  • server [command] runs a command on the server itself, broadcast messages every player, playerlist prints who’s online with their IDs, and tp teleports players.
  • With the mod on both sides, admin command use is logged to the server console, so you can see who spawned what.

It runs on BepInEx (BepInExPack_Valheim) wherever you install it. The install itself (BepInEx, the plugins folder, client vs server mods) is in how to add mods to a Valheim server. After a game patch, check that the mod has an update before your admins rely on it.

Valheim server console commands vs the server window

Valheim server console commands run from a player’s F5 console, not from the dedicated server window. Iron Gate’s guide documents commands only for the in-game console; the one thing it tells you to press in the server window is Ctrl+C, to stop it cleanly. If you need to run commands without joining, that takes a mod such as ValheimRcon or Server Devcommands’ server command.

Launch parameters like -name, -world and -preset are sometimes called server commands too. They’re start settings, read once at launch, and the Valheim dedicated server guide walks through the start script they live in.

Why F5 or a command doesn’t work

When F5 doesn’t work in Valheim, the console is almost always switched off: it’s been disabled by default since patch 0.221.4. Turn it on in the gameplay settings or add -console to the launch options. If the console opens but admin commands fail, the server doesn’t see your ID as admin.

Problem Likely cause Fix
F5 does nothing Console disabled Gameplay setting, or -console in Steam launch options
F5 does nothing on a laptop F keys mapped to media keys Press Fn + F5
Kick or ban refused Your ID isn’t in adminlist.txt, has a typo or wrong case, or a stray space Copy it from F2 exactly, one per line, then restart
Admin works on one server, not another You edited the list in the wrong folder Check the server’s -savedir; the list sits next to the worlds
devcommands does nothing on the server Cheats are off on dedicated servers Install Server Devcommands, or play cheats in a self-hosted world
Command gives an error Wrong name or arguments Run help; names change between patches
Mod commands stopped after a patch The mod isn’t updated for the new build yet Update the mod, or wait for its update

Skip the console: ask the copilot

Admin lists, ID formats and modifier values are a lot to remember for a game night. With Valheim server hosting on GameTeam, the AI copilot in the panel handles the server side for you. It edits adminlist.txt and the other lists, changes the launch line, restarts the server, makes backups and reads the log when something breaks. You pay per GB of RAM, from $0.49/GB a week or $1.99/GB billed monthly, with unlimited slots; Valheim’s own 10-player limit is the only cap.

Paste a friend’s ID from the F2 panel and type: “make Steam_76561198000000000 an admin, set raids to none and back up the world first.” The copilot takes the backup, adds the line to adminlist.txt, puts -modifier raids none on the launch line and restarts, so your friend can open F5 and kick the next griefer. FAQ

How do I use commands on a Valheim server?

Enable the console in gameplay settings or with the -console launch option, add your F2 ID to the server’s adminlist.txt, restart the server, join and press F5.

Why doesn’t F5 work in Valheim?

The console has been off by default since patch 0.221.4. Turn it on in the gameplay settings or add -console to the launch options. On laptops, try Fn + F5.

Can I use console commands in Valheim multiplayer?

Yes. Player commands work for everyone, and admin commands work for anyone in adminlist.txt. Cheat commands work only when you host from the game itself; on a dedicated server you need the Server Devcommands mod.

What are all the cheat commands in Valheim?

Type devcommands, then help: the game lists every command with its arguments. The table above covers the ones people use most, from god and fly to spawn and raiseskill.

How do I make someone a Valheim server admin?

Add their ID, in the format Steam_… or another platform prefix exactly as their F2 panel shows it, on its own line in adminlist.txt, then restart the server.

Do admin commands block achievements?

The lock is for cheats. Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ ties it to devcommands such as spawn, which flag your character and world after a confirmation prompt. kick, ban and the other admin commands don’t need devcommands turned on.

Can I run commands from the server window?

Not in vanilla Valheim. Commands run from an admin’s F5 console in game. For remote commands, use a mod like ValheimRcon or Server Devcommands.
