Automaton is a 1.12.2 Forge questing pack with over 246,000 downloads on CurseForge, and it is a deliberate reaction against the kitchen-sink approach. Only 98 mods, focused almost entirely on Immersive Engineering and Mekanism, with more than 200 quests guiding you through them.

The result is a factory pack that stays legible. You are never wondering which of six power systems to use, because the pack has already decided — the quest chain tells you what to build and why, and the mod list is small enough to load quickly and run well.

Automaton has one of the clearest progression paths of any tech pack, and it is worth knowing before you start:

• Early game. Furnus for ore doubling — the first step that makes mining worthwhile.
• Immersive Engineering. Real production capacity, with the multiblock machines and visible infrastructure the mod is known for.
• Steel and beyond. Immersive Petroleum and Immersive Tech open up serious power generation.
• Applied Energistics 2. Storage and autocrafting, which is where the pack stops being a chore.
• Mekanism. Miniaturised infrastructure, up to 5x ore processing, and a fusion reactor at the top.

Automaton runs on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge — the version where Immersive Engineering and Mekanism are both at their most complete. It is a finished pack, so your world is safe from surprise updates.

Client and server must run the same build. With a mod list this small, a mismatch is easy to spot in the log, but it will still stop the connection.

This is a light pack for what it does. 4 to 5 GB runs a group of two to four comfortably, and 6 GB covers five or six players with substantial factories. Compared to a 400-mod pack doing similar things, it is remarkably cheap to host.

Immersive Engineering multiblocks are the thing to watch. They are large and they tick, so a server where everyone has built their own full production chain costs more than the mod count suggests. Sharing infrastructure helps more than adding memory.

If your group has bounced off kitchen-sink packs because nobody knew where to start, Automaton is a strong answer. The quests make the next step obvious, the mod list is small enough to actually learn, and the payoff — a working fusion reactor — is a real goal rather than an open-ended sandbox.

Immersive Engineering rewards scale, and a single well-built production line serving the whole server is both more satisfying and much lighter than five parallel ones. Groups that pool their infrastructure early get to Mekanism faster and spend far less time troubleshooting lag.
