Full moon survival pack

What Become a Werewolf actually is

Become a Werewolf is MagmaMcNet's Forge pack for Minecraft 1.12.2, with over 65,000 downloads on CurseForge. The premise is in the name: you can be turned into a werewolf, gaining strength, speed and heightened senses, with the moon cycle governing when the transformation takes hold.

It is a themed pack rather than a large one — the mod list exists to support the werewolf mechanic and the atmosphere around it, not to build a tech tree. That keeps it easy to install and easy to explain to a group.

Why the moon cycle matters on a server

In single player the full moon is a scheduling detail. On a server it is an event. Everyone shares the same night, so the moon becomes a thing the group plans around: who is out, who is locked in, who has not told anyone what happened to them last week.

That shared clock is the pack's real design. Servers where players agree to lean into it — building somewhere defensible, treating the transformation as something with consequences — get far more out of it than servers where everyone just enjoys the extra movement speed.

Which Minecraft version does it run on?

Become a Werewolf runs on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge, with 5.x as its latest release line. It is a stable, finished pack on a version with mature Forge support, so hosting it is straightforward — you just need the matching older Java runtime, which the panel sets up when you install the pack.

All players need the same pack build. Transformation state is stored per player in the world, and version mismatches are the usual reason someone loses their werewolf status after an update.

How much RAM does a werewolf server need?

3 to 4 GB handles a small group comfortably. 6 GB is plenty for a larger server. This is a light pack by modded standards, and nothing in it runs constantly in the background the way a tech pack does.

The heaviest thing the server does is night-time mob activity combined with players moving fast across the map. If sessions feel choppy, that is entity and chunk load rather than a memory shortage.

Starting a Become a Werewolf server on GameTeam

  • Create a Minecraft server and install the pack with its 1.12.2 Forge build.
  • Let the first start complete, then check the console is clean before inviting anyone.
  • Give everyone the identical pack version.
  • Decide whether PvP is on before the first full moon, not during it.
  • Back up the world regularly — player transformation state lives in the save.

PvP changes what this pack is

With PvP off it is a power fantasy: you get stronger, you move faster, everyone enjoys it. With PvP on it becomes something closer to a social deduction game, because a werewolf on a server full of humans is a threat and people will react accordingly. Both work — pick one deliberately rather than leaving the default.

Do not make everyone a werewolf on day one

The pack is most interesting when the transformation is rare enough to matter. Servers where the whole group turns in the first session lose the tension immediately and are left with a fairly ordinary survival world. Letting it spread slowly, with people choosing whether to seek it out, gives the server a story worth staying for.
