BYG rebuilds Minecraft's overworld and beyond with dozens of new biomes, trees and stone types. Running it on a server takes a little planning before the first chunk generates.

Biomes You'll Go Overview

What Oh The Biomes You'll Go is

Oh The Biomes You'll Go — usually shortened to BYG — is a world generation mod from AOCAWOL, Corgi Taco and YaBoiChips that adds more than seventy new biomes across the overworld, the Nether and the End. It is not a modpack: it is one mod that changes the map your server generates, which is why people build packs around it rather than the other way round.

The point is exploration. Vanilla exhausts its scenery quickly; BYG gives a server a reason to keep walking, with biomes that have their own trees, stone, flowers and mobs rather than a recoloured forest.

How it changes a server

The moment BYG is installed, every newly generated chunk can contain its biomes. Players who set out from spawn find landscapes that no longer look like the game they know, and base sites stop being interchangeable — people start choosing where to live for the view and the wood type.

It also pairs well with other mods. Because it only touches world generation and the blocks that come with it, BYG sits happily alongside tech, magic and quality-of-life mods, which is why it appears in so many packs.

Forge or Fabric, and which Minecraft version?

BYG is published for both Forge and Fabric, on CurseForge and Modrinth. Pick the loader your other mods use and take the build that matches your Minecraft version exactly — world generation mods are unusually sensitive to version mismatches, and a wrong build will either refuse to load or produce a world you cannot safely update later.

For newer versions the authors have also released a successor, Oh The Biomes We've Gone, aimed at 1.20.1 and above. If your server is on a recent version, check which of the two your pack or your players actually mean.

Generate the world once, and generate it right

Add BYG before your group starts building. If you install it into an existing world, the new biomes only appear in chunks generated from that point on, which leaves a visible seam where old terrain meets new and can cut through anything already built near the edge. Removing it later is worse: chunks that contain BYG blocks come back broken.

The safe order is simple — install the mod, delete or archive any throwaway test world, then let the server generate fresh terrain before anyone picks a base site.

How much RAM does a BYG server need?

On its own BYG is not heavy: 3 to 4 GB runs a small group comfortably. What costs memory is generation itself. A server producing new chunks for several players who are all exploring in different directions works far harder than one where everyone is at home, so expect the first sessions to be the demanding ones.

If you are running BYG inside a larger modpack, size the server for the pack rather than for the mod — the biomes are rarely the expensive part of that equation.

Adding Biomes You'll Go on GameTeam

  • Create a Minecraft server and choose Forge or Fabric to match the rest of your mods.
  • Install Oh The Biomes You'll Go from the mod installer, taking the build for your exact Minecraft version.
  • Start the server once and check the console for a clean load before anyone joins.
  • Reset the world if it was generated without the mod, so the new biomes appear everywhere.
  • Set a spawn point and let people explore before they commit to base locations.

Trees, wood and the building side

Each biome brings its own wood and stone, which quietly turns BYG into a building mod as much as an exploration one. Groups that like decorating end up organising expeditions purely to bring back a palette nobody else has.

Can players join without installing the mod?

No. BYG changes blocks and world generation, so every client needs the same build as the server. Send your group the exact file you installed rather than letting each person pick their own version.
