Left 4 Dead 2 Server Hosting
Survive the campaigns — and each other in Versus — with your crew while the AI copilot keeps the server up.
What do you need for Left 4 Dead 2 server hosting?
Left 4 Dead 2 server hosting needs very little: 1–2 GB of RAM, Valve's free L4D2 dedicated server (Steam app 222860), port 27015 open and a server.cfg that lets your group in. You can host a local server from the lobby, but then the lobby leader's PC and connection carry everyone. Rent a Left 4 Dead 2 server instead and it stays up at one address. On GameTeam you pay per GB of RAM, from $0.49/GB a week, slots are never charged, and the AI copilot changes modes, edits the config and reads the log for you.
Run your Left 4 Dead 2 server by just asking.
An L4D2 server is a stack of console variables, map commands and plugin folders. Say what the group wants tonight and the copilot edits server.cfg, loads the right map in the right mode, and checks the log when somebody can't get in.
Always the Same Address
Up every night regardless of who is online first — no more "who is hosting?"
Custom Maps Delivered
Fast download configured by the copilot so joining players get the campaign, not a kick.
Versus-Size Slots
Unlimited players at a per-GB price — the big nights do not cost extra.
Left 4 Dead 2 with friends
The definitive co-op zombie shooter: four survivors, relentless hordes and an AI director that keeps every run different. Versus, Scavenge and custom campaigns keep a community busy for years, and the good servers become the group's regular night.
Left 4 Dead 2 server RAM requirements
1-2 GB.
| Your server | Starting RAM | From (Budget, weekly) |
|---|---|---|
| 4-player co-op or Realism, stock campaigns | 2 GB | $0.98 / week |
| 8-player Versus or Scavenge with a few plugins | 2 GB | $0.98 / week |
L4D2 is one of the lightest servers you can run, and 2 GB is our smallest plan, so it covers a stock server and most plugin setups. What does work hard is the CPU when the Director spawns a horde, which is why a fast core matters more than memory. If you add a big custom campaign or a pile of plugins and the server starts to struggle, raise RAM in one click from the panel. Player limit: 8-32 depending on mode and plugins.
How to set up a Left 4 Dead 2 server on GameTeam
Pick RAM and a location
2 GB is plenty for a Left 4 Dead 2 server. Pick the location nearest your group from 25+ across Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific, so the horde reaches everyone at the same time.
Tell it how you play
Ask the copilot for Versus, Expert co-op, a mutation or a Steam group lock, or open left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg in the file manager. Custom campaigns go in left4dead2/addons as .vpk files.
Get the group in
Players type connect and your address (shown in the panel) in the developer console. Set your Steam group ID and members also see the server under Steam Group Servers in the main menu.
Good to know before you start
Mutations and custom campaigns are enabled server-side, and custom maps need fast download configured for players to receive them.
Left 4 Dead 2 server settings explained
Everything lives in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, one setting per line, read each time the server starts. A fresh install doesn't create the file. The line people miss most is sv_allow_lobby_connect_only: it defaults to 1, which turns away anyone who connects by IP.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
hostname | The server name players see in the browser and in the Steam group list. |
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only | 1 (default) lets players in only through a matchmaking lobby. Set 0 so connect by IP works. |
sv_password | Password needed to join. Leave it empty for an open server. |
rcon_password | Password for remote console, so admins can run commands from their own game. |
sv_gametypes | Modes the server accepts. Default: coop,realism,survival,versus,scavenge,dash,holdout,shootzones. |
mp_gamemode | The mode in play. It is set with the map, for example map c2m1_highway versus. |
z_difficulty | Easy, Normal, Hard or Impossible. In the menus those are Easy, Normal, Advanced and Expert. |
sv_steamgroup | Your Steam group ID. Members see the server under Steam Group Servers. |
sv_steamgroup_exclusive | 1 means only group members can start a game on the server while it's empty; others can join once it has players. |
sv_search_key | Lobbies that search for a dedicated server only match servers with the same key. |
sv_consistency | 1 (default) makes the server check players' critical game files, which turns away some modified clients. |
sv_allowdownload / sv_downloadurl | Let players fetch missing files from the server, or from a web address you set as the download URL. |
sv_alltalk | 1 lets both Versus teams hear each other. Default is 0. |
motd_enabled | Shows the welcome message from motd.txt when a player connects; the banner comes from host.txt. |
Left 4 Dead 2 server commands
Run these in the server console from the panel, or from your own game with rcon in front once you've entered rcon_password. The copilot can run any of them when you ask in plain English.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
status | Lists the players online with their Steam IDs, plus the server's IP and port. |
map <map> <mode> | Loads a map in a mode, such as map c1m1_hotel versus. |
map <map> mutation4 | Starts a mutation by its code: mutation4 is Hard Eight, mutation12 Realism Versus. |
changelevel <map> | Moves to another map and keeps the current mode. |
kick <name> | Removes a player from the server. |
banid / addip | Bans a Steam ID or an IP; writeid and writeip save the ban lists to disk. |
z_difficulty <level> | Changes the difficulty on the fly. |
exec server.cfg | Re-reads your config without a restart. |
meta list / sm plugins list | Shows whether MetaMod:Source and your SourceMod plugins loaded. |
Can I add mods to a Left 4 Dead 2 server?
Yes. SourceMod plugins, custom campaigns and mutations are all supported.
Two kinds of mods run here. SourceMod plugins live only on the server: admin menus, rule changes, and the extensions (L4DToolZ, Left 4 Downtown 2) that lift the 4-survivor limit for 8-player co-op or bigger Versus. Custom campaigns are .vpk addons in left4dead2/addons, and every player needs them too, so the group subscribes to the same Workshop item. The server doesn't download from the Workshop for you. The dedicated server guide shows how to find a campaign's first map name.
Left 4 Dead 2 server ports
On GameTeam you don't forward anything: the panel shows your server's exact address and port, which may not be these defaults. Running your own Left 4 Dead 2 local server from home? Forward 27015 to that PC. A connection behind CGNAT can't host at all.
Pay per GB of RAM. Never per slot.
You pay for memory, not seats, and billing can be weekly, so you are never locked into a month the group might not play. Change RAM in one click, or switch the same server to another game. The AI copilot is included on every plan.

What server owners say
"Honestly didn't expect much from an 'AI manager', but it's how I run my server now. I'll type something like 'why did the server crash last night' and it actually reads the logs and tells me."
Verified review
"I'd been on two other hosts before this. What sold me was the AI manager catching a memory leak in one of my mods and naming the exact one — something I'd been chasing for weeks."
Verified review
"I'm not very technical and setting up servers always stressed me out. Now I just ask the assistant to fix a config, and it either walks me through it or does it for me."

Left 4 Dead 2 server hosting FAQ
What's the difference between a local server and a dedicated server in L4D2?
Choose Local Server in a lobby and the lobby leader's PC hosts the match: everyone plays on that player's internet connection. A dedicated server runs on its own machine, stays up whoever is online, keeps your settings and plugins, and sits at the same address every night.
How do I rent a Left 4 Dead 2 server?
Pick RAM (2 GB is enough) and a location, pay, and the server is set up for you. Billing on GameTeam can be weekly, so a Left 4 Dead 2 server rental for one campaign weekend costs one week, not a month. Keep it as long as the group plays, and switch it to another game when you move on.
How many players can join an L4D2 server?
The game itself is built for 4 survivors in co-op and 4v4 in Versus, so 8 is the standard limit. SourceMod with a player-limit extension such as L4DToolZ raises it for 8-player co-op or bigger Versus. That limit comes from L4D2 and your plugins; GameTeam never charges per slot.
How do my friends join without a server browser?
L4D2 hides its server browser. Players can type connect and your address in the developer console, find the server under Steam Group Servers if you set sv_steamgroup, or open the hidden browser with openserverbrowser and add it to Favorites. Remember sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0, or direct connects are refused.
Can I run Versus, Scavenge and mutations?
Yes. Any mode in sv_gametypes works: load it with the map, like map c5m2_park scavenge. Mutations use their codes, for example mutation2 for Headshot! or mutation5 for Four Swordsmen. Ask the copilot for "Realism Versus on Dark Carnival" and it finds the code and loads it.
Can I add custom campaigns from the Workshop?
Yes. Copy the campaign's .vpk into left4dead2/addons with the file manager, then start its first map. Everyone who joins needs the same campaign, so share the Workshop link with the group. Players who don't have it get dropped at the map change.
How much does Left 4 Dead 2 server hosting cost?
The price is set by RAM alone: $0.49/GB a week on Budget, or $1.99/GB billed monthly. A 2 GB server is $0.98 a week, and that is the whole bill for L4D2 server hosting: slots are unlimited, DDoS protection is included, and the first 72 hours are money-back.
Can I change the tickrate?
No. Left 4 Dead 2's server has a fixed tickrate, so a -tickrate launch flag does nothing.
Run it yourself — or let the copilot.
Same server, any game.
Same server, every campaign night.
Deploy it, tell the copilot the mode and difficulty, and send the survivors the address.
