Avorion Server Hosting
Design your own ships, build an empire and explore a procedural galaxy with allies while the AI copilot keeps it turning.
What do you need to host an Avorion dedicated server?
An Avorion dedicated server needs 4–8 GB of RAM, the free Avorion Dedicated Server (SteamCMD app 565060, anonymous login), port 27000 plus three more UDP ports open, and a galaxy set up in server.ini. Or skip the setup: GameTeam's Avorion server hosting is pay per GB of RAM, from $0.49/GB a week, slots are unlimited, and the AI copilot edits the galaxy settings, adds Workshop mods and reads the server log when the galaxy starts to lag.
Run your Avorion server by just asking.
Avorion rewrites server.ini every time it shuts down, so an edit made on a running server simply vanishes. The copilot does it in the right order: save, stop, edit, start, then read the value back. It handles the mod list and the log the same way.
A Galaxy That Persists
Sectors you explored stay simulated; the empire you built is there tomorrow.
Lag, Explained
Ask why it is slow and the copilot reads the log and points at the cause instead of guessing.
Whole Alliance, One Plan
Unlimited player slots — the bill is per GB of RAM, not per captain.
Avorion with friends
A space sandbox where every ship is built block by block, from a fighter to a capital that dwarfs stations. Fly toward the galactic core, trade, mine, fight factions and other players, and build the fleet — and the alliance — that can survive what lives at the center.
Avorion server RAM requirements
4-8 GB, scaling with how much of the galaxy players have visited — each explored sector is stored and simulated.
| Your server | Starting RAM | From (Budget, weekly) |
|---|---|---|
| 2–5 players flying together | 4 GB | $1.96 / week |
| 6–12 players, home sectors and fleets | 6 GB | $2.94 / week |
| 12+ players spread out, or a mod list | 8 GB | $3.92 / week |
An Avorion galaxy is 1,000 by 1,000 sectors and only gets generated as players explore it. Every player and alliance keeps several sectors alive with their ships in them, so a crew scattered across the galaxy costs much more than the same crew flying as one fleet. Big fleets and scripted mods add more. Start here and add RAM in one click; the galaxy stays exactly as it is. Player limit: 10-30. Fleet sizes and active sector count drive load more than player count.
How to set up a Avorion server on GameTeam
Pick RAM and a location
4 GB suits a small group. Choose the location closest to most of your players: we have 25+ across Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific, including the USA and Canada.
Set up the galaxy
Decide the seed, difficulty and scenario before the first player joins: they are fixed when the galaxy is generated. Tell the copilot, or edit server.ini in the file manager. Already have a galaxy? Upload its folder and keep flying.
Invite your alliance
Copy the address from the panel. Players connect to that address from the multiplayer screen in Avorion, and with isListed on, friends can also find it in the public server list.
Good to know before you start
Galaxy size and difficulty are fixed when the galaxy is generated, so they are worth deciding before the first player joins.
The most common problem
Each sector players visit stays simulated, so a group spreading out across the galaxy costs far more than the same group staying together.
Avorion server settings explained
server.ini sits in your galaxy folder, next to the sectors, players and alliances data, and is split into [Game], [System], [Networking] and [Administration]. Edit it only while the server is stopped: Avorion writes its own values back on shutdown. One typo can make the game regenerate the file with defaults, so back up first. The settings owners change most:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
name / description | The server name and description in the server list. Defaults Avorion Server / An Avorion Server. |
password | Password players must enter to join. Empty means open. |
maxPlayers | Players at once. Default 10; raise it as far as your RAM allows. |
isListed | Shows the server in the public server list. Off by default. |
accessListMode | Blacklist (default) lets everyone in except banned players; Whitelist lets in only the players you list. |
motd | Message of the day shown to players when they join. |
Seed / Difficulty / Scenario | Set when the galaxy is generated. Difficulty runs from -3 to 3, default 0. Changing them later does not rebuild the galaxy. |
HardcoreEnabled | Perma-destruction: a destroyed ship can't be rebuilt at a repair dock and its turrets and upgrades are lost. |
InfiniteResources | Creative mode for everyone on the server. |
PlayerToPlayerDamage | Turns PvP damage on or off. Default on. |
CollisionDamage | Damage from ramming: 1 is full, 0.5 is half, 0 is none. |
LogoutInvincibility / LogoutInvincibilityDelay | Makes an offline player's ships indestructible, 30 seconds after they log out by default. |
MaximumBlocksPerCraft / MaximumPlayerShips / MaximumPlayerStations | Caps on ship size and on ships and stations per player. -1 means no limit. |
sameStartSector | Whether every new player starts in the same sector or gets their own on the outer rim. |
saveInterval | Seconds between automatic saves. Default 600. |
aliveSectorsPerPlayer | Sectors kept running for each player and alliance that has ships in them. Default 5 in multiplayer. The biggest single lever on RAM and CPU. |
workerThreads / generatorThreads | Threads that run the simulation, and threads that generate sectors during hyperspace jumps. Keep at least 2 generator threads. |
rconPassword / rconPort | Set a password to turn on RCON, on port 27015 by default. |
Avorion server commands
Type these into the server console, or into chat as an admin. Avorion makes you admin through the --admin launch option with your SteamID64; on GameTeam the copilot sets that and restarts the server for you. Run /help to see every command your version has:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/save | Saves the galaxy right now. |
/stop | Stops the server. Run /save first, and never just close the console: that can damage the save. |
/status | Prints the server's current status; much more detail with profiling on. |
/help | Lists the commands on your server version. |
--admin <SteamID64> | Launch option: the Steam account that is admin of the server. |
--galaxy-name <name> | Launch option: which galaxy to load or create. |
--max-players <number> | Launch option: player limit for this start. |
--seed / --difficulty | Launch options: seed and difficulty when a new galaxy is created. |
-t all | Launch option: very detailed logging for tracking down a problem. Slows the server, so turn it off afterwards. |
Can I add mods to a Avorion server?
Yes, through Steam Workshop and a server-side mods folder. Server and client mod lists must agree for scripted content.
Server mods are listed in modconfig.lua in the galaxy folder: mods holds what the server runs, by Workshop ID or folder path, and allowed lists client-side mods (such as UI mods) players may use. Workshop mods are downloaded and kept up to date on every server start, and joining players are told what they need. Achievements are switched off in a modded galaxy.
Avorion server ports
At home all four game ports have to be forwarded. On GameTeam there is nothing to forward: the panel shows the address and port your server actually uses, which may differ from these defaults.
Pay per GB of RAM. Never per slot.
You pay for memory, not seats, and billing can be weekly, so you are never locked into a month the group might not play. Change RAM in one click, or switch the same server to another game. The AI copilot is included on every plan.

What server owners say
"Honestly didn't expect much from an 'AI manager', but it's how I run my server now. I'll type something like 'why did the server crash last night' and it actually reads the logs and tells me."
Verified review
"I'd been on two other hosts before this. What sold me was the AI manager catching a memory leak in one of my mods and naming the exact one — something I'd been chasing for weeks."
Verified review
"I'm not very technical and setting up servers always stressed me out. Now I just ask the assistant to fix a config, and it either walks me through it or does it for me."

Avorion server hosting FAQ
How much RAM does an Avorion server need?
Plan for 4–8 GB. A small group flying together is fine on 4 GB. Memory follows how many sectors are alive at once, and that grows with how far apart players and alliances are and how big the fleets get. A busy or modded galaxy wants 8 GB. On GameTeam you change RAM in one click.
How many players can an Avorion server hold?
maxPlayers is 10 by default and you can raise it; 10–30 players is a realistic range. Load comes from live sectors and fleet sizes more than from player count, and GameTeam never charges per slot.
How much does Avorion server hosting cost?
Avorion server hosting price is per GB of RAM: $0.49/GB a week on Budget, or $1.99/GB billed monthly. A 4 GB server is $1.96 a week; 8 GB is $3.92 a week. Slots are unlimited and the AI copilot is included.
Can I rent an Avorion server just for a few weeks?
Yes. To rent an Avorion server you can pay by the week, so a month-long push to the core costs four weeks, not a contract. Keep it as long as the alliance plays, or switch the same server to another game afterwards. The first 72 hours are money-back.
How do I add Workshop mods to my Avorion server?
Add each mod's Workshop ID (the number at the end of its Workshop link) to the mods table in modconfig.lua and restart: the server downloads it and tells joining players which mods they need. On GameTeam, send the copilot the links. Back up first, because a mod that breaks after a game update can crash the galaxy.
Can I move my existing galaxy to GameTeam?
Yes. Your galaxy is a folder: on Windows it is in %appdata%/Avorion/galaxies/, named after the galaxy. Upload that folder, keep the same galaxy name, and start the server. Our support team can help with the move too.
How do I make myself admin?
Avorion gives admin rights to the SteamID64 passed with --admin when the server starts. Tell the copilot your Steam profile or ID and it sets the option and restarts the server.
Is there Avorion server hosting in the USA or Australia?
The USA, yes, and Canada too. There is no Australian location yet: our Asia-Pacific sites are Singapore and India, and Singapore is the closest for players in Australia. You can move the server to another location later without losing the galaxy.
Can I run the beta branch?
Avorion has a public beta branch on Steam, and players have to be on the same version as the server. Be careful going back: the server guide on the Avorion wiki warns that downgrading a galaxy from beta to the default branch will almost certainly corrupt it. Ask our support before switching so we can confirm it and back the galaxy up.
Same server, any game.
Your alliance's galaxy, still there when you jump back in.
Pick the RAM, tell the copilot how you want the galaxy, and send the alliance the address.
